i decided to participate in a little blog party this month called “blogtember,” hosted by jenni at story of my life. knowing me, i will not see it through. but at least for now, i thought it would be fun. i think her prompts will work best for me as starting points and ideas, instead of specific journaling prompts.
today’s prompt was to describe where or what you came from. for me, this made me think of my parents, and a great birthday date we had last week. i told my dad i wanted to take him out to dinner. and since he hates it when i try to pay (to the point of arguments in nice restaurants), he dragged his feet. but all of a sudden last week, he agreed.
i took them to a little waterfront restaurant nearby called riverwinds. my dad and i went for happy hour last year, but he’d never been for dinner. they have the best french onion soup this side of anywhere. it is never vegetarian. but it is worth it to me.
they eagerly reviewed the menu. my papa loves going out to eat almost as much as i do, and we’re slowly winning my mom over, too.
the view doesn’t hurt either.
my dad and i both got the french onion soup. it really is the best i’ve ever had.
he told me it lived up to my guarantee.
my mom stole some bites from my dad. then she ordered a chicken and pasta dish with sundried tomatoes. i think she said it was delicious. but she was most excited for the flower on top.
and i ordered the same salad i get every time — a baked walnut and honey-crusted goat cheese number, with strawberries and beets. it’s out of this world, but never quite gets enjoyed enough after that amazing crock of soup.
and the awesome waitress surprised him with a birthday dessert. she heard us talking about his birthday, even though it was a month ago, and asked us what he might like when he was away from the table. it was an incredible little apple pie.
and he let me pay with no tears this time.
