vegetarians, avert your eyes. i did something.
i’ve had a craving for real sushi for maybe half a year. i couldn’t shake it.
and then i remembered, i’m a vegetarian for me, and i only need to answer to myself. i’ve never gotten philosophical about it, never pushed my beliefs. and i went into it with the idea that if it got too hard or i didn’t want to do it anymore, i wouldn’t have to.
so last night, i decided to just go for it. after some veggie appetizers, i ordered a salmon roll, and my previous-favorite: an alaska roll (which is salmon + cucumber + avocado). modified, it’s still my favorite sushi since going veg (with just cucumber + avocado).
wine was sipped, photos were taken, and i just dove in (after sniffing around a little bit).
i have to say,
i was disappointed.
it had been 3 years minus 17 days since i stopped eating meat, and i could still remember the buttery, perfect little bites of salmon hitting my tongue. it used to be one of my favorite foods. EP kept checking in to see if i felt happy and not sick-to-my-tummy. he asked how good it was, and i didn’t know what to say. i shrugged, and we agreed on, “eh.”
i ate 6 pieces of the 12 that came out. i took a break, sipped some wine, and really didn’t want to keep eating it. the next sniff i took settled it.
so, now at least i know. i’m done dreaming of it and wondering how it would taste if i ate it again.
i started this way of eating for health reasons, to see if i could right some past wrongs and prevent some negative family history from creeping up on me. but there are so many good reasons for me. [not for everyone. i still don’t like to push what i think on others… except, you know, EP.]
but let me share a few benefits.
consumption of grain products, vegetables, and fruits is associated with a substantially lower risk for many chronic diseases, including certain types of cancer. [source]
my favorite list tonight came from vegetarian times, and includes:
- you’ll live longer
- you’ll have more energy
- you’ll help reduce pollution
- you’ll avoid toxic chemicals
- you’ll spare animals
- you’ll save money
